The Tell Tale Heart – Teaching Unreliable Narrator and Symbolism .

This two-day lesson plan dives headfirst into the erratic world of a narrator, who claims he is not a madman. Throughout the first day of the lesson, you help your students discover that Poe's narrator may not be reliable after all, while making connections to your students' lives and relationships. Different methods of reading the story are employed, and a Partner Reading Guide is included to help students pause and discuss while continuing throughout the short story.

During the second day of the lesson, students engage in a discussion and activity regarding common, visual symbols. Slowly, they are pushed toward thinking of more abstract symbols, using examples that many students would be familiar with, and then asking that students think of their own examples of symbols in literature. Finally, they turn to the piece again and discuss one of the more obvious symbols and then one not-so-obvious symbol in the text.

This product includes:
**An author biography
**Vocabulary terms and definitions
**Scripts for both days of class
**A handout
**Pictures of common symbols
**A brief description of a writing assignment you can use to check for concept understanding.

The Fall of the House of Usher – Teaching Imagery, Symbolism, Suspense, and Interpretation
.

This week long lesson plan dives headfirst into the erratic world of a narrator and follows him as he visits an old friend, who is even more erratic. Throughout the week, students learn to appreciate the significance of imagery, recognize symbols in the piece, learn about tone and mood and how that contributes to a feeling of suspense, and read about common interpretations of the text. Students have written assignments, partner work, group work, and independent work throughout the week, with a final write-up discussing which interpretation they believe is the write one, using text evidence to support that claim.

This product proves you with everything you need to explain the nuances of "The Fall of the House of Usher" and help students appreciate this complex but masterful short story.

This product includes:
**An author biography
**Vocabulary terms and definitions
**Scripts for all days of class
**Handouts and Graphic Organizers
**Multiple types of activities
**An optional activity you can have your students do during a 6th class period
