This is a fun project I used when I taught 8th grade for five years. I've also used it with high school students and it went over great with them. After reading "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Poe, students pretended to be police (or Poelice) who investigated the homicide from the story. I had a local officer come in to hand out Miranda Rights cards, teach students the basics on investigating a crime scene, and give an overview on interrogating suspects.
Then students composed a descriptive essay that described the crime scene and a narrative essay about their interrogation of the narrator/suspect from the story.
