The elements and principles of design are the building blocks of art-making. The elements of design are the tools to make art. The principles of design are ways to effectively use the elements of design. They work together to allow anyone to create works of art and also allow any teacher to have specific common criteria by which to assess student artwork.
These resources provide a written definition beside a visual example of each element and each principle. The worksheets give students the opportunity to draw each one (using the maple leaf or their own symbol) and to write out a definition as they learn the elements and principles. This method explores one element and one principle per lesson, leading to a summative task where each student chooses three elements and three principles to apply in a work of art.
