Product Description
The Empty Box: Comparing Numbers
A Movin’ & Groovin’ Review

This practice/review activity focuses on understanding place value as well as the meaning of the equal to, greater than, and less than signs. Students will analyze expressions and choose which of three numbers belongs in the empty box to make the expression true.

Fast-paced and fun; that’s this review activity in a nutshell! In first grade, it’s perfect for wrapping up and reviewing! In second grade, it’s a quick and active way to activate prior knowledge before beginning a related unit!

The packet includes:
• Suggested Instructions for Use
• 30 Numbered Task Cards
• Recording Sheet
• Answer Key
• 6 Practice Cards for teaching students how to complete the tasks
• Practice Recording Sheet
• Practice Sheet Answer Key
• Anchor Cards or Number Chart

Included in the pdf are detailed instructions for my favorite method of using this review activity: I hand each child a recording sheet and task card, then spread the remaining cards on a table. On my signal the kids begin to solve and record at their desks, then hurry to the table to trade for a new card. Solve, record, trade, repeat…. See how many you can finish before time runs out!

Some students will complete all 30 tasks, while a few may only solve a handful of problems in the time allotted, but since the kids are moving and the activities are engaging, I am free to assist children who are struggling, making the activity worthwhile for each and every student! It’s built-in differentiation!

There are innumerable ways to use this packet. You might choose a card or two each day to review during calendar time, have your students complete six cards together daily, thereby covering the entire review in the course of a week, or perhaps you’ll hang the cards on the walls to create a “write the room” review activity.

I use Movin’ & Groovin Reviews throughout the year, but I find them especially useful near the end of the school year to help prepare my first grade students for end-of-level assessments. My kiddos LOVE these activities because they get to “Move & Groove” while showing off their new skills!
