“The Escape from East Berlin” is an “Escape the Room” common core-aligned lesson that incorporates language arts, social studies, and math. This lesson promotes teamwork, real-life problem solving, and complex reasoning skills. It promotes literacy, incorporates technology, and is sure to get your students engaged in and excited about reading.
The lesson is designed for ten teams of students with generally three students per team. The lesson is approximately 25 minutes long, but one could allow a few extra minutes for instruction before and debriefing after. This package includes directions, team name tags, a reading passage and comprehension questions, an answer key, and puzzle images.
You will need to attain ten boxes, ten locks, and ten electronic devices. You will need to have internet access and availability to the website: www.jigsawplanet.com. You will need to figure out what your “tunnel” will be for the participants who manage to escape. (Perhaps a row of desks covered in dark butcher paper.)
Common Core language arts standards used in this lesson include:
· using textual evidence to draw conclusions and make inferences
· analyzing key details
· using context clues to determine the meaning of words or phrases
The social studies focus of this lesson is being able to:
· describe the aftermath of World War II: the division of Germany, and the rise of the Superpowers.
· explain how the division of Berlin signified a Europe divided by two ideologies: capitalism and communism.
The main math objective used in this lesson is being able to:
· solve real-world problems involving volume of geometric figures.
