Initially designed to go with the text One Nation, this lesson covers the Explorers of early America. It is aligned with Ohio's New Learning Standards for Social Studies as well as Language Arts Reading Informational Text. Included with this lesson is a suggestion for extension for Gifted Learners as well as modification for Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners. In addition to the lesson, a pre- and post-test are included. A post-test on Power Point can be downloaded for $1.00. This allows teachers to complete assessments quickly using BYOD or in-class low tech for quick response and teachable moments. The process, product and questions on the assessment are based on Bloom's Taxonomy in order to differentiate for diverse learners.
The lesson allows for independent as well as group work in a cooperative setting that encourages students to research beyond the text book and engage in the process of information seeking using both text and technology. This lesson is user friendly for classes with many or as little as one or two computers. I have included the link to purchase the "One Nation" text. However, any text with information about Explorers should be sufficient.
