Teaching students to understand and evaluate the phenomenon of online fake news has become an ESSENTIAL media skill. This unit is ideal for students in grades 7-10, but can easily be adapted for more senior or junior students depending on skill level (stronger junior, weaker senior). This 15+ lesson unit is wholly engaging, and challenges students to learn active reading skills, news article analysis and writing skills and media literacy skills. Teachers are also encouraged to create a fake news website and have students publish their fake news articles to track how easily fake news can be spread. The unit includes detailed lesson steps as well as all necessary handouts, media links, assignment/handout exemplars and evaluation rubrics. As an added bonus, this unit is great prep for students taking the OSSLT in Ontario schools.
