PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

"The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe can be a difficult short story to read. This unit should have your students interacting with this difficult Poe text in no time.

It includes the following:

- Step-by-step, day-by-day lesson plans for 6 days.

- The original story by Edgar Allan Poe and an abridged version. Both come with biographical information on Poe. The abridged version is for struggling readers or for differentiation purposes. I developed it by deleting aspects that were not needed to understand the story. The abridged version is about half the size of the original.

- Reading guide with answer key (works with both original and abridged versions)

- Reading quiz in two versions with 10 multiple choice questions and answer key (works with both versions of the story)

- Unique vocabulary puzzle that relates to the story but is challenging and fun to solve

- Close reading activity where students record descriptions for either the inside or outside of the Usher mansion. They will recreate the house using these descriptions and write a paragraph to explain their choices using quotes from the text. A house template is provided along with examples and a rubric for grading it.

- Research on a real-world issue related to the story.

- Hands-on method for categorizing exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution - with answer key.

- Viewing guide for the 1960 movie starring Vincent Price is included if you choose to watch it along with a comparison/contrast activity for print and non-print texts.

- Final test with 30 questions in 2 versions is included with answer key.

All quizzes and tests are in an editable PowerPoint file within the zip file in case you wish to make changes.

This unit has so much to offer! Collaboration and individual work, close reading, incorporation of quotes, research, and hands-on activities add variety to the classroom and make learning more fun and engaging.
