The Fall of the Soviet Union Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 12 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teacher’s key for easy marking. It contains 28 questions based on a Crash Course World History video clip and the Cold War Museum website.
Students will begin this assignment by watching a portion of the Crash Course World History video:USA vs USSR Fight! The Cold War. The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of the time. The video clip will introduce Mikhail Gorbachev and his policies of glasnost and perestroika. The sudden freedom of the press for Soviet citizens is then explained as a major cause for the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. The fall of communist dictatorships across Eastern Europe is then reviewed as Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Romania are all examined. Following the video, students will proceed to the Cold War Museum website which will provide more details about the collapse of the USSR itself. Again, Gorbachev and his policies of glasnost and perestroika are reviewed. The emergence of nationalist movements across the USSR, specifically in the Baltic Republics, is discussed. Also, the territorial dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia is reviewed to show the internal conflicts which broke out in the USSR in the late 80's and early 90's. The attempted coup in the summer of 1991 is covered, as is the resulting public protest over the communist regime and the mutiny of the armed forces. The reading concludes with the resignation of Gorbachev, the disintegration of the USSR, and the resulting Commonwealth of Independent Republics.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
