The Falling Flowers is a lovely story of a grandmother who takes her granddaughter from the countryside of Japan to the city to a beautiful park to celebrate Hanami. In a grove of Japanese Cherry Trees, all in bloom, Mayumie participates in the yearly Japanese ritual with her grandmother, sitting beneath the trees, throwing the falling flowers in the air, and just enjoying the peace of the nature.
My packet contains the best of Reading Comprehension strategies. In addition, students will familiarize themselves with the Japanese culture throughout the story, looking carefully at each colorful illustration. As a Post-Reading activity, students will make a Japanese scroll with hand drawn branches and Cherry blossoms. There are directions for writing a Haiku about the Cherry Blossoms that students can write at the bottom of their scrolls.
