A helpful motif activity using The Fault in Our Stars.
In this activity, students work in groups. First, they read over the description sheet of what a motif is and discuss examples from Harry Potter. Next, they choose a motif from a provided list. When students have all chosen their motifs, they complete a graphic organizer, taking notes on where each motif is found, how each connects to specific characters, and finally make a judgment on how the motif expresses a theme or character.
This activity lends itself well to discussion.
