Vocabulary is a necessary part to aid in the comprehension of our students, especially in regards to novel comprehension. Included in the following pages are terms that students will come across throughout the reading of The Fighting Ground. The vocabulary terms are separated by the specified times in the novel, allowing any teacher or student to identify specific terms before each reading.
Included with each term is not only the time section where the term can be located, but also includes the specified part(s) of speech and the definition. All definitions were either located from dictionary.com and wordcentral.com or were modified to aid in the comprehension of the definition. Terms that are located in parentheses are the form that the terms may be located in the text but are not necessarily defined using that suffix. If the addition of a suffix also changes the part of speech, then the different part of speech will also be included in parentheses. If a term does not include any additional terms in parentheses beneath it, then that is the form in which the word is used in the novel.
This list is helpful for students of all abilities and is specifically helpful in pre-teaching lessons completed by any and all teachers. The vocabulary varies in intensity, allowing you to decide which words need to be taught or reinforced. The terms can then be used as weekly or daily formative assessments, and then can be utilized in an end-of-unit summative assessment.
