Preparing students for state exams does not have to be boring! This is a student-friendly nonfiction text about the first Thanksgiving, including multiple-choice and short-answer questions that hit upon a variety of Common Core standards. Questions ask students to consider genre, author's purpose, and text structure, to summarize information in a whole text and within a paragraph, to use textual evidence to prove a point, and to use context clues to define unknown words. An answer key is included along with a brief explanation of what wrong answers may reveal about a student's understanding. The text was written with my third grade students in mind, but would likely be appropriate for students in higher grades as well, or for advanced readers in lower grades.
This text also provides a great opportunity for a close read/shared reading with a focus on the different kinds of text structures that authors can use.
