The following 2-sided worksheet reviews the five methods of indirect characterization via the easy to remember acronym STEAL (speech, thoughts, effects/reactions from other characters, actions, and looks/appearances). The front side can be used to explain the activity and the back can be used for homework or assessment. The top table requires students just to find evidence from a text on any character. The bottom table requires students to explain what they infer from that evidence. The worksheet can be applied to any work and it's a great mini-lesson that deepens their understanding of characterization.
