Native American Indians had a highly complex culture, especially those who lived on the Great Plains. Since most did not develop a written language, they communicated their history, thoughts, ideas and dreams from generation to generation by creating symbols and signs such as animal symbols.

They were a deeply spiritual people. Their religion was dominated by rituals and belief in a spiritual connection with nature and these beliefs were reflected in the various symbols they used such as the animal symbols. Symbols and totems are believed to represent the physical form of a spirit helper and guide so, animal symbols are very special to Native Americans.

The Native Americans assigned value to all forms of animal life. These ranged from creatures as small as insects, to mid-sized animals such as dogs and cats to the largest of animals such as bears and buffalo.

Many animals were assigned religious values creating a parallel existence on earth and in the heavens, many having different meanings to different tribes. But every Native American Tribe revered the buffalo, the eagle, the wolf, the horse and the bear.
