The Flag of the United States is one of six symbols that is recognized by the Library of Congress as an official symbol of America.

The flag of the United States is one of the nation's most widely recognized and important symbols. It is a powerful symbol of Americanism and is proudly flown on many occasions. Throughout the world the American flag has been used in public discourse to refer to the United States of America.

The flag of the USA consisting of 13 stars & 13 white and red stripes is commissioned by Congress June 14, 1777. “Resolved, That the flag of the 13 United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” The Resolution did not specify any particular arrangement, number of points, nor orientation for the stars. The arrangement and appearance was up to the maker of the flag. The stars were to be in a circular pattern, to symbolize the fact that, "no colony would be viewed above another.” The stripes were to represent each of the 13 colonies.

The flag contemporaneously known as "the Continental Colors" has historically been referred to as the first national flag. Betsy Ross is credited with being the original designer of the first American flag in 1776 and rarely referred to as the "Flag of '76" but as the "Betsy Ross Flag.” There are little or no primary sources to prove the Betsy Ross story. Others have claimed to have created the first flag as well.

On April 4, 1818, a plan was passed by Congress in which the flag was changed to have 20 stars, with a new star to be added when each new state was admitted, but the number of stripes would be reduced to 13 to honor the 13 Original colonies. The act specified that new flag designs should become official on the first July 4 following admission of one or more new states. With the addition of Alaska and Hawaii as states in 1959, the 5 star-flag became the version of the flag in longest use.

In 1998, teams of museum conservators, curators, and other specialists helped move the flag from its home in the Museum’s Flag Hall into a new conservation laboratory. Following the reopening of the National Museum of American History on November 21, 2008. The flag is now on display in a special exhibition, "The Star-Spangled Banner: The Flag That Inspired the National Anthem," where it rests at a 10-degree angle in dim light for conservation purposes.
