2) An "Exchange Rates" Activity. It begins by asking your students to define the exchange rate and explain how changes in the exchange rate affect the price of acquiring currency. Next, students are provided with several exchange rates between the U.S. dollar and other international currencies and they're asked to convert the price of American goods using the exchange rates provided. Students are then asked to use international exchange rates for the Pound, the Euro, and the Yen to convert the price of three goods in the U.S. economy, and then recalculate the prices several months later after the exchange rates have changed. This demonstrates how changes in exchange rates cause the price of goods to increase or decrease for foreign consumers. Lastly, students will analyze two graphs provided that investigate the phenomena of fixed and flexible exchange rates. Using the graphs provided, students will graph changes in the foreign exchange market and predict how these changes will affect the value of international currency, as well as net exports and the balance of trade.
3) A "The Foreign Exchange Market" Activity. It begins with a colorful graphic organizer that asks your students to define foreign exchange demand and explain the factors that contribute to the inverse relationship between exchange rates and currency demanded. Next, students will be asked to define foreign exchange supply and explain the factors that contribute to the positive relationship between exchange rates and currency supplied. Next, students will be asked to identify the 4 components of foreign exchange supply and demand and will critically think as to how several factors can influence the foreign exchange market. Finally, students will use their knowledge to analyze 12 foreign exchange markets and changes in currency supply and demand that will generate changes in exchange rates. Students will graph the change, identify the change to the value of the currency being analyzed, and then investigate how certain economic indicators will be effected.
These activities can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Students can work independently, in pairs or these activities can be used as a jigsaw in order to facilitate a class wide discussion about the topics discussed in the activity.
4) A detailed answer key to the lesson activities to save you time and help guide student comprehension.
