The Fortune Cookie Game ©
is a great way to reinforce the rules of grammar while practicing composition and sentence structure in a social classroom setting. It is also an opportunity to practice utilizing current vocabulary words.
This game supports the following National Council of Teacher of English (NCTE) Standards: 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12 and especially… Standard 6.
"Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g. spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and non-print text."
A set of playing cards, servicing 2 to 10 students in grades 6 to 12, is composed of 52 unique cards, each containing two words from the different basic parts of speech. The parts of speech include nouns, pronouns, verbs, conjunctions, prepositions, adjectives and adverbs. The object of the game is for the student to create a one sentence fortune that is composed of as many words as possible from the words listed on his/her card. Since many words can be used as several different parts of speech, the student must in order to get points be careful to use the word given only in the part of speech indicated.
The student score is based on the number of words that he/she uses from the card and the cleverness of the fortune he/she creates as judged by his/her student peers.
---> Each student’s fortunes are recorded on paper and turned into the teacher so that they can be edited for grammar and sentence structure. Current vocabulary words are also encouraged in the game by offering bonus points for their use. Suggested use as a fun change of pace to reinforce grammer, vocabulary and practice writing sentences.
The classroom set of materials includes "pdf" files of both faces of the playing card and an instructions card all of which can be printed on card stock. Multiple decks of cards can be made by copying the printed pdf files.
