During this lesson, students will read the article "The Founding of Illinois." Teachers should read this as a whole group guided lesson, at least for the first read of the article. Teachers may want students to read the article more than one time in various groupings. There are words underlined and defined throughout, so these are worth pointing out to the students. Additional details may warrant highlighting or further discussion based on teacher preference.
Students will also have an interactive journal page on the Founding of Illinois to complete while they read, or after reading the article. Teachers can decide how they wish to complete this. It is a simple foldable with space for students to take a few notes, summarizing each of the four eras of Illinois development into a modern state (may require teacher guidance).
After these activities, a 5 question quick-check is available to be used for a grade, as homework or as guided practice. An answer key for this quick-check is also available.
