This is a collaborative, cross-curricular unit in math, writing, science and social studies. In math money, measurement, data collection and addition concepts are practiced. In writing students will write an informative/explanatory piece convincing a buyer to buy his house. In social studies after urban, rural and suburban communities have been introduced, the student will decide what area his house is located in and mention it in his writing. In science concepts about wind can be talked about.
The idea is for a group of students to work together to build a house that can withstand the big bad wolf blowing it down (a hair dryer). The house is made of certain items the teacher has set out. Students will have to stay within a given budget when purchasing materials and follow a rubric stating what is expected.
