The Fraction House invites students to explore numerator and denominator by drawing several people (or faces) in each room in a house. They count and record how many people there are in all (denominator) and how many are in each room (numerator). Once they have completed the fraction house on the front side of their paper, students use the back to draw a new house with 3 or 4 rooms, adding people to the rooms and recording each fraction as part of the whole group.
This activity, created by Terry Palmieri (BZTeacher), is an innovative way to introduce and practice numerator, denominator and writing fractions of a group. An easy to follow directions card, sample page, and student page are provided. It can be used as a learning center, small group instruction or whole class lesson.
