This unit corresponds with the non-fiction memoir "The Freedom Writers Diary." In this unit, students work with other non-fiction sources including articles and documentaries in order to analyze the many themes and issues within the novel. Other activities require students to write extended responses using text evidence.
Keep in mind this novel is considered a banned book. It should be taught to older students (juniors & seniors in HS). Please make sure this novel is approved by your school board & administrators before teaching.
