The Reign of Terror (also known as The Terror), was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between 2 rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of "enemies of the revolution".

The guillotine (called the "National Razor") became the symbol of the revolutionary cause, strengthened by a string of executions. The death toll ranged in the tens of thousands, with 16,594 executed by guillotine (2,639 in Paris), and another 25,000 in summary executions across France. Notable executions included:

King Louis XVI
Marie Antoinette
Many Girondins
Louis Philippe II Duke of Orléans
Madame Roland
Georges Danton
Antoine Lavoisier

Robespierre emerged a leader and despot who thought anything was justified when it came to the revolution's rights. He changed his views on the death penalty, saying it was justified against enemies of the Republic. He reinstalled censorship, in the press and acted for a secular state. He changed the calendar and in November 24, 1793 he set the Revolutionary calendar as the new benchmark.

In July 1794, Robespierre was finally accused of dictatorship and tyranny and evicted from the Convention. The members voted for his simultaneous eviction and execution, without allowing him to defend himself. The following day, Robespierre was beheaded to an ovation by the people of Paris.
His death was the symbol of the Reign of Terror's end and the end of the democratic movement at the same time.
