This worksheet consists of a table containing four amino acids (diagrams and names) that represent the four functional categories of amino acids: polar, nonpolar, acidic, basic. Students apply their prior knowlege of functional group properties and general amino acid structure to match each amino acid pictured with its category and then provide scientifc reasoning to support their claim. This activity can be done independently or collaboratively and serves as an effective formative assessment if completed in class. Students should be encouraged to explicitly link the observed structural components of each amino acid to the assigned properties via scientific reasoning. An answer key is provided demonstrate this level of detail.
