It is time to design the Ugliest Sweater Ever in this opinion writing activity. You will prompt students with “The Ugliest Sweater Ever Contest” in your classroom. You can make the contest real by simply having a prize for the student who designs and describes why their sweater is the ugliest! You can make it something as simple as a piece of candy or some of your classroom/school reward tickets.
Students will brainstom and the design thier ugly sweater using materials you select. Before students even begin to write, complete the “Other ways to say” sheet to work on building a stronger vocabulary of describing words. Students must write a letter to you (or a judge of your choice) why their sweater is the ugliest. You can have them use the OREO format (Opinion sentence, Reason, Example, Opinion) or another format of your choice. Depending on the grade level would be how many reasons and examples students must have in their letter.
You will read the letters and determine a winner from the description. You can also give other awards such as funniest, brightest colors, ect. using the ribbons. You could also let another class vote, hang the writing/sweater in the hall and have others vote or do a gallery walk with a rule you can’t vote for yourself.
The winner earns the prize discussed at the beginning of the contest!
