The Combined Gas Law follows from Boyle's Law and Charles' Law. This Powerpoint presentation examines the work of Boyle and Charles. It explains what happens to the volume of a gas at constant temperature as pressure changes (Boyle's Law), and what happens to the volume of a gas at constant pressure as temperature changes (Charles' Law). The presentation explains how these two relationships work together to give the combined gas law. There is a sample combined gas law problem.
The combined gas law enables the student to examine how changes in temperature or pressure affect the volume of a sample of gas. Avogadro's law tells us that the number of moles affects the volume as well. At the honors level Avogadro's law is added, and the more general law, PV = nRT, is developed. This opens up additional avenues for calculation including gas stoichiometry.
