In my classroom, I have used "The Steps to Self-Control." These steps occur when one does not follow the classroom rules. They are warning, get ready chair/reflection corner, buddy teacher and office to see an administrator.
Turn what could be a negative experience into a positive one using this sign. Simply place over a designated chair or corner in your classroom and if a student has moved beyond a warning, ask them to "get ready." Getting ready consists of:
1. Sitting down.
2. Taking 3 deep breaths.
3. Returning to the class because we are not the same without you.
I have rarely had a student move beyond this step. It allows them to be reflective without filling out a worksheet. It gives them an opportunity to cool off quickly without spiking to a new level of frustration.
I have personally used this with first, second, third and fourth grades with much success!
