The Giant’s House is an original work for recorders, choir and piano.
The Giant’s House takes around 20 minutes to perform and can be used to promote discussion, as it can ask more questions than it answers.
A group of children take shelter from a storm in a spooky house. Inside they find a magical room, guarded by a terrifying giant who has a heart-rending secret.
The Giant's House started out as a BAG recorder work, with a determination to avoid G major! That legacy can be spotted in a couple of the songs. However, this was boring and The Giant's House was soon re-envisioned as a mini-opera for, perhaps, a choir or class project with recorders still forming an integral part, whilst still managing to avoid "G".
Imagination is Encouraged
It is easy to add other instruments and can be acted out or just sung as is. Acting directions are sparse and, as I said, your imagination is encouraged.
The recorder part is relatively simple using the range G to D and, apart from the occasional B-flat, can be played with one hand.
The piano part is also relatively simple except, possibly, in the storm sections where there are lots of accidentals. However, they are just block triads and are by no means difficult.
The Musical Structure
The music is continuous however, the individual sections or songs are:
1. The Storm
2. The Door
3. Decision Time
5. The Storm Rages
6. The Toy Room
7. The Giant!
9. A Terrible Fate
11. Against Instinct
12. Don't Weep for Me
13. Escape and Return
There is a PREVIEW file is the first 30 seconds or so of four of the songs. The lyrics to these excerpts are at the bottom of this description.

Lyrics for the Demo File
12. Don’t Weep for Me
Don't weep for me. See what you see.
See that before you, see the misfit that's me.
Don't cry for me. It's what must be.
People like me are never part of life's tree.
Oh see the love within my heart, see the love I see....
7. The Giant
What is this I hear below? I bet it's an intruder.
This is just so very wrong, in fact, nothing is ruder.
On their legs I'll sits, Grind their bones to bits!....
Looking 'round It's so dark, shadows creeping ev'ry wheres.
Light'ning shows, shapes expose, guarantee to scares us....
13. Escape and Return
As we walked out the door, we'd all seen a sight
that none of us could believe.
We'd seen shelves on the walls filled with toys and games,
so many we could not conceive.
We decided the giant had been wickedly wronged
and we'd tell all our folks in our world he belonged.
And the wonderful, magical place we had found....
What a wonderful, talented person he was.
Oooh. Aaah. Oooh.
