Yoga Brain Break can help manage classroom behavior by giving students time to stimulate their brains and calm their bodies. It can increase focus and decrease test taking anxiety, calm and activate the brain at the same time, and increase comprehension when paired with an academic task. Brain breaks based on read alouds may be included as part of the ELA block to reinforce comprehension and story sequence or use it during a social skills lesson.
The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray is a great story for the begining of the school year. After being made by a class of students, the Gingerbread Man gets left alone. He becomes lost in the school while looking for his class and meets several different school personnel along the way. The yoga sequence takes students from sitting to standing three times, giving their bodies ample time to move, stretch, and become engaged in the story. The full sequence ends with a calming time for students to contemplate a place that makes them feel happy and puts a smile on their face.
