Product Description
Looking for a Common Core-friendly way to jumpstart your unit, frontload background knowledge, or just lessen your workload? Put the responsibility on STUDENTS so they can play the role of teacher to each other!

This 24-hour unit uses standards W.7 (short research projects) and W.6 (peer collaboration using technology) to help students understand all the reasons this book is a complex novel that endures over time. Use at the beginning, middle, or end of your unit on The Giver.

Students are assigned or self-selected into small groups and given one of 9 topics; then they have 24 hours to work together, using credible sources and available technology, to collaboratively find the “answers” to their prompted questions. (Each prompt asks more than one question, which lends itself neatly to multiple students dividing up work evenly!) The next day, student groups orally report their findings to the class.

Prompts include researching the author and her beliefs, the basics of Communism, the dystopian genre and its characteristics/history, awards and characteristics of The Giver, American laws, censorship, and The Giver series overall for context.

This 3-page download includes:
• the directions
• all nine prompts
• a peer assessment section
• a mastery rubric with room for self-assessment and teacher comments
