This document contains a complete, chapter-by-chapter and page-by-page break down of The Giver, by Lois Lowry. The text overview follows the development of two major themes throughout the books 170 pages and includes chapter by chapter analysis regarding how each theme is developed and conveyed. Within each chapter, the events and actions of the characters are analyzed from TWO major perspectives: First, how the author develops the aligned theme in each section; Second, what specific literary skills and standards the student will have to master to understand that theme and its development. In addition to the chapter-by-chapter analysis, each chapter/section includes major comprehension and analytical essay questions that the students must complete to prove understudying of both the events of that chapter as well as understanding of theme and how it is developed throughout that section. The text overview also includes two major "over-arching" questions that I used as my final (both essays). Along with the comprehensive and in-depth text-overview, I have included each lesson that is directly aligned to the text overview. Each lesson includes active reading and annotation strategies and directions to ensure students are following the story and highlighting the information that will help them answer the analytical essays at the end of each chapter. The lessons include "Daily Questions", or "DQ"s, which are meant strictly as discussion questions that allow students to organize their thoughts while also allowing them to add notes shared by their other classmates. The "DQ"'s are directly aligned to the more complicated and analytical "Daily Response Questions", or "DRQ", that the student's are required to answer at the end of class or for homework. These are much more difficult and complex (I required my students to write an 8-10 sentence paragraph for each including textual evidence to support the claim). All this together is an ENTIRE UNIT plan already created for you to use and edit as you please!
Note; If you wish to purchase just the Text Overview OR the bundle of lesson plans, send me a message and I will upload them on here in a separate document for you to purchase.
