PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This product is for a current events news article and final project to use with the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry.

A summary of The Giver: Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

News Article: I used a current events news article to relate to the concept of release in The Giver. Students will read and discuss the article and then write an extended response related to The Giver. There are two graphic organizers included. The first one is for higher level students and the second is for lower level students.

Final Project: Students will work independently or in small groups to create their own society. A graphic organizer is included to allow students to plan a location, government, laws, currency, flags, homes, etc. There is also a chart for you, as the teacher, to keep track of student progress. Lastly, a rubric to assess the final project is also included.

These materials were designed and used with my eighth grade special education language arts students. I hope that you enjoy this product and find as much success as I did in my classroom.
