This 10-question Anticipation Guide serves as a tool to promote a discussion or writing prior to reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. It additionally asks students to choose the statement they feel most strongly about and write about it in a paragraph on the back. It is one double-sided handout.
Anticipation Guides can be interactive, independent work, homework, group work, etc. They can very easily be modified based on the class or particular group that you are working with.
I personally like to come back to the anticipation guides that I use before reading a piece of literature after finishing. I will save the originals and have students compare and contrast their attitude before and after reading.
I am marking it as appropriate for 7th grade and up, but one of the questions does ask about euthanasia for babies born with health problems, so be aware if you'd like to change that if it could upset younger readers. I purposely made the questions as provocative and high-interest as possible, as I use this resource for my lowest readers with higher ages.
