The Giver Chapter 24 is creative writing project that asks students to continue the story of The Giver after the ending. The project worksheet guides students through the planning process to make sure they address key story elements such as developing character, plot, and conflict. The document gives students multiple choices and suggestions to spark creativity and avoid the dreaded “But I have no ideas!” complaint. Of course, students can submit an original idea to you as well.
In my classroom, students are expected to complete this planning document and then check in with me before starting their first draft, and then checking in with me again before starting their final draft. However, feel free to follow your preferred writing process as this assignment can ideally expand or shrink to fill the time available. I have included a potential rubric for this assignment as well.
Please note, this resource is designed specifically for a 6th grade English Language Arts class, but could easily be used from upper elementary school into early high school. While the project was conceived with The Giver specifically in mind, the editable Word document allows you to adjust the assignment to any book. I find that students respond particularly well to this assignment at the end of The Giver due to its ambiguous ending. The goal, however, is for students to show deep understanding of character, plot, and conflict in writing their next chapter.
