Six Common Core Aligned Writing Prompts for Lois Lowry's The Giver

This resource contains 6 Common Core aligned argumentative writing prompts and the corresponding lessons to guide students to write argumentative paragraphs about The Giver. These writing prompts will push your students far beyond basic comprehension of the novel and address questions such as “How is social context revealed through character?” and “Is Jonas more shaped by internal or external conflict?,” plus four other thought- provoking writing prompts.

Each writing prompt contains with it a set of graphic organizers for a complete lesson that guides students through writing a paragraph that relies on textual evidence. The lesson begins with a pre-writing graphic organizer, then students develop a claim, then students are guided through developing a paragraph with a graphic organizer. In each lesson, students give and receive feedback on their paragraphs from a partner and then incorporate the feedback into a final paragraph. Each lesson takes about 1 hour from start to finish. This resource contains a suggested answer document which will help guide students in their responses.

I have taught writing this way for several years and this approach has vastly improved the proficiency of my middle school students at finding relevant evidence and using evidence to defend claims. It works especially well for struggling writers who make not know where to start when faced with an analytical writing prompt.

This resource is fully aligned to Common Core anchor standards R1 and W1. It is best suited for middle school students.
