In this packet you will find materials to carry you through the entire book. The pre-reading survey addresses controversial issues that students will be surprised are part of the community, and that can be related to elements of real life such as arranged marriages, communism, capitalism, and even helicopter parents. *This assignment is the only oldie in the packet- the rest I created from scratch.**
The Analysis Questions cover Lowry's writing style and how it is appropriate to the community she created, as well as help form student connections to the book. A newspaper writing activity focuses on expository writing, and a memory transmission activity ties students to Jonas while ushering them into a debate about a new memory blocking drug. A style analysis activity focuses on the differences in Lowry's writing when describing plain community life and describing a memory, which reinforces parts of speech and sensory detail. Quickwrite topics pull out thematic elements for students to explore throughout the book. Students will bray over the job assignments handed out during the “Ceremony of Twelve.” (I split each pair among both genders—you won’t be surprised that many boys do not want to be ballet dancers, but you may be surprised that few students want to be brain surgeons. Opportunity for a deep discussion about how both of these jobs require kinesthetic intelligence/ body knowledge, yet only one is valued.) Argumentative writing is also included multiple times. For the disobedience arguments, this is the YouTube link, but make sure to stop it at “Yogurt gabba gabba” after they discuss pretzels, otherwise there are bad words. http://blog.heritage.org/2014/05/12/joke-new-york-senate-passes-bill-making-yogurt-state-snack/
I parlay most of these assignments into deep class discussions to help students see the connections between the fictional community and real life, and they respond enthusiastically to these "magical moments."
**Please check out the complimentary Arranged Marriage & Banned Books Fishbowl activity. They worked beautifully after chapter 6, and after chapter 20, respectively. It is listed as a separate item because it contains my Fishbowl Format, which is malleable for other topics.**
Cap everything off with a four corner debate and final exam. Please note that these lessons have been tested out with numerous years of students and revised based on their performance and feedback. This unit is a guaranteed winner!
