If you want students to really connect with Lois Lowry's award-winning novel, The Giver, then this is the perfect assignment. Students will work in groups or pairs to think about what a Utopian society would look like to them. They will answer important questions to have a deeper understanding of the society they are creating. Then, comes the really fun part. They will create a 3-D model of their society using materials of their choice (i.e. cardboard, felt, construction paper, Lego blocks, etc.). Finally, students will introduce this perfect society to their classmates.
Outside Materials Needed:
• Class set of The Giver by Lois Lowry
• Variety of materials to create the 3-D project (Students will bring the materials to class.)
