The end of the novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, drives my students crazy! I allow the students to write the "missing chapter 24" to complete the novel in a way that they find more satisfying, and attempts to answer some of the questions and thoughts that they felt were left unfulfilled. This assignment assesses student's understanding of the end of the novel, as well as allowing them to creatively write, which they always enjoy, and often don't get to do enough of (in my opinion!). A rubric is included to guide the students in their work. Enjoy!
