The Giver is a book written about a futuristic community where everything is controlled and regulated for efficiency. The characters are concerned with their precision of language and how they can help their community. However; as all amazing books do, there is a twist and an issue with how the protagonist functions in his community and the resulting effects are surprising and hauntingly beautiful.
This newspaper writing activity is great for creative writing in your classroom! There are 3 sections:
1. The students are asked to write as a community member to entice and persuade others to join the community.
2.The students are asked to write as one of the leaders, the chief elder, and explain what Jonas's new role is and how this will affect them.
3. The last column is written from the perspective of Lily, the main character's sister, as she explains what life is like for her as she has just turned 8 years old.
