Generate rich and purposeful classroom discussions using an expository paired text with "The Giver" by Lois Lowry.
Pairing texts with novels is necessary to ensure that students are reading at a deeper level and making connections across texts. Newsela offers a great set of expository articles to connect with "The Giver." Newsela is a free resource for teachers - if you don't have it - you should definitely get it!
For this activity I used one of Newsela's articles to create a Think, Rethink and Reexamine activity to pair with either chapter 1 or 2 of the novel. The activity includes a pre-reading reflection, after reading reflection, and a connection to the novel reflection focused around big ideas found in the novel and the article. It also includes the graphic organizer for students to organize their thoughts. This activity works best with time for whole class discussion, group discussion and/or pair/shares.
