This product includes specific and modifiable instructions and rubric.
After my 8th graders finished reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, I had them create a periodic table of literary elements relating to the novel. I really wanted to avoid the standard book report or summary, and I also wanted my students to be creative and critical thinkers. In order to create the periodic table, students must have a deep understanding of the text, its characters, and key themes. I used it as a summative assessment for CCS RL.8.2 and RL.8.3 because I also required my students to explain their rationales for the categories they created and the elements they chose (as you will see in my instructions). A rubric is also included in the instructions. Feel free to modify it to suit your needs.
*This was also the perfect connection to their science class because they had already learned about the Scientific Periodic Table of Elements earlier in the year.
