This personal dictionary should be used to enhance vocabulary when reading The Giver. To use, present the vocabulary words before reading each chapter (or group a couple chapters together, that’s what I always end up doing) and discuss possible meanings. Look for word chunks that may look familiar. Find the actual vocabulary word in context in the book and discuss possible meanings. Before reading, make sure students record the correct definition (with your guidance) in their personal dictionary. Lastly, have them write a sentence using the word correctly.
I usually use this personal dictionary with a small group of my advanced 6th graders, but it can be used for multiple grades. The beauty of this tool is that you can provide as much or as little assistance as you see fit. Some of the words are suggested words by different educational writers, but most are words that I found my students struggling with.
