This ready-made, ready to print, Common Core aligned lesson plan focuses on Chapter 20 of Lois Lowry's novel "The Giver." It goes well-beyond basic comprehension and helps students make connections between themes in this chapter and earlier events in the novel, culminating in a writing activity where students explore what the author is revealing to readers about the importance of memory. This lesson includes a reading and a writing component, along with a rubric for streamlined grading. It could be used at any level in middle school, but is most aligned to 6th grade standards.
The directions on the worksheet are written such that middle school students should be able to follow them independently. I have used this with 6th grade boys to prepare for a Socratic seminar, but it could also be used to prepare for an essay on theme, or as a practice to responding to text-based questions with appropriate evidence. It works best when everyone in the class has his or her own copy of the book, and is able to write in the book.
