The Giver is an important book to study. If discussed successfully, students will be encouraged and motivated to investigate and analyze the world in which they live.
For this unit, I have created thought-provoking questions(set at strategic cliff-hanging sections of the book), as well as introductory and concluding assignments.
My personal use of this book is a read aloud with my 6th graders. Questions are discussed daily, and I have found the kids wanting to race into my classroom to share their thoughts with others.
Check out my end-of-book task card assignment.
Students are given the freedom of choice to write about their favorite task in a response to literature format. Choice is the key to motivating students-ironic that there is no choice in The Giver!
I love teaching this unit, and you will, too!
