Product Description
Embrace ALL FOUR of Lowry’s Giver books to differentiate reading and fairly assess writing!

This list of rigorous prompts can be used whether you’re running a literature circle or ANY unit on The Giver. Every year when I teach this novel, I inevitably run into two roadblocks: students who have already read the book, or students who inhale it and need more challenge. (Sometimes, students just loved The Giver so much, they just wanted to read more like it!) I dealt with this by assigning journals to write during and after reading, using the following list of prompts. Using journal writing as the shared experience makes expectations fair for students and easier on you to grade.

This download comes with a total of 8 pages of Common Core –aligned content:
• Each editable sheet of prompts starts with 8 prompts that are the SAME for all four books, giving you a common assessment of their understanding.
• Then, each list follows with 8 prompts that are specific to that book: The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger, or Son.
• In total, there are 16 prompts per sheet, giving you a total of 40 unique prompts.
• Each sheet comes with a rubric to assess Common Core standard W.10 (writing routinely…), but this activity can easily be modified to assess a variety of Reading Literature or Writing standards, especially RL.1 (citing evidence)!

The prompts vary in difficulty level and in the inherent task (predicting, analyzing, summarizing, or interpreting and defending). Feel free to strategically assign or modify the prompts that you feel are most appropriate for the ability of your class and your unit overall. Some are particularly rigorous for older or advanced students.

In addition to using these prompts as journal entries, you could also “transfer” the prompts into other assignments and make them the foundation for your unit test, literary analysis essay, or other summative assessment/ project.
