This document has the entire text of Chapter 16 of The Giver by Lois Lowry on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, I have included questions pertaining to the text on the left. This insures that students are active DURING their reading, and don't wait until the end to comprehend it. So, for example, I have asked students to stop and define a vocabulary word, clarify something that has just occurred in the story, or even draw a simple picture based on what they're visualizing at that point. This is great for an in-class reading assignment, or even homework. The main point is to understand the reading, so these are not lengthy questions to answer - but, rather, checkpoints to make sure the reader is engaging fully with the text.
