This unit plan for The Giver by Lois Lowry is Common Core aligned. It begins with a self-assessment, learning targets, and "I can" statements for RL.1, RL.2, RL.3, and RL.4. Next, students complete a 10-statement anticipation guide. Students then complete 2-column notes about dystopian literature based on a Prezi available FREE here on TPT. (The link is included.) The novel is divided into 8 reading assignments, each with close reading passages. Each close reading passage has questions designed for a Socratic seminar, with a total of 39 open-ended questions for group discussion. The culminating project is a PowerPoint, box project, storyboard, Prezi, or other medium, with the following requirements: plot summary, character analysis with text citation required, an illustrated theme, symbolism analysis, and 3 visuals. A graphic organizer, rubric, and handout detailing project requirements is included. At the end of the unit, students reassess their progress related to the "I can" statements and revisit and discuss the anticipation guide.
This unit was overwhelmingly voted as the favorite by my students this year!
