This lesson is for Chapter 7/8 of The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is a simulation of the Ceremony of Twelve. This will help students understand the gravity and meaning of this ceremony in the book, aiding in their comprehension of what Jonas is undergoing. The simulation includes everything from what you should say in the beginning; mock tests for disposition, energy level, intelligence, and interests - the four components of the "testing period" for the community members; it also includes labels of the jobs for when students receive their job; there's a brief in-class writing assignment on this job; there's a sign for your door; etc.!
It is a totally engaging lesson and students love getting a mock job; it inevitably elicits questioning and personal insight, as well as some laughter!
Finally, I have included a two-page handout for a possible writing assignment. The handout has students answer a question about becoming the Receiver (like Jonas) or not - and helps them outline their response, using a graphic organizer and other tips.
If you need the Word document (it's a PDF), then email me and I'll send it to you!
