In Depth (Common Core aligned) Lesson Plan for The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The focus for the lesson is Cause & Effect and Central Message. This is a great activity to do with your students for Earth Day, but a valuable lesson for any time of the year!!

Subject: Science / Reading

Topic: Cause and Effect; RL 1.2 Central Message

Grade: 1-2 (modify to fit the needs of your students)

Guiding Question: How is the earth affected by the influence of man?

Specific Objectives:

- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the central message in “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein.

- Students will recognize the relationship of cause and effect on Earth’s resources.

- Students will analyze a photograph of pollution of Earth’s natural resources and assess the cause and effect relationship.
