Much of this memoir deals with negative events; by having students analyze how these events led to positive outcomes, the focus will go from a narrow focus to better idea of the larger theme of resilience.

I find this activity really helped my students get past some of the atrocities Jeannette and her family face; they began to look beyond the awfulness and look at how these events shaped Jeannette and her siblings' lives.The lesson also provided a great springboard for further discussion and analytical writing.
