The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
Negative Situation – Positive Outcome Activity

In this detailed lesson plan, you will guide students as they evaluate how negative events in the memoir led to positive outcomes for Jeannette and her family in The Glass Castle.

Much of this memoir deals with negative events; by having students analyze how these events led to positive outcomes, the focus will go from a narrow focus to better idea of the larger theme of resilience.

Download includes a Microsoft Word file to edit and a pdf that is read to print.

I find this activity really helped my students get past some of the atrocities Jeannette and her family face; they began to look beyond the awfulness and look at how these events shaped Jeannette and her siblings' lives. The lesson also provided a great springboard for further discussion and analytical writing.
